Framing For Garage Door Opening

Framing For Garage Door Openings

Installing a garage door starts with the framing. Typically, you have to make sure that the hole in the garage wall is about 1 1/2 inches bigger than the door on each side. This gives you room to put the framing in. In the process of framing for garage door openings, you typically have a choice in terms of materials.

Wood is the most preferred material for framing. Why? Well, it's pretty cheap, sturdy and it's easy to work with. When the time comes for the actual installation of the garage door itself, you would find he task to be quite easy if you use wood framing. The material is also renewable and quick to install. Also, you won't have to worry about the framing damaging your door.

One problem with this material, however, is that it can cause some problems when you are trying to obtain an insurance policy. Insurance companies usually frown on wood construction, especially if you have equipment like a blowtorch or a welding machine in the garage. Another problem is that it would require your regular maintenance. Unless you buy premium wood, you should consider the negative effects of the weather and take measures to prevent them.

Another option is to use steel framing. This typically costs a lot more than wood framing for garage doors. This material is strong and rigid -perfect for heavy-duty use. Supplies are also not a problem and the prices of steel are pretty much stable.

However, it could damage wood doors if you are careless in opening and closing them. You should also know that they can be a bit difficult to install. You need to fasten the framing to the wall using screws instead of nails. The upside to this is that screws would not loosen like nails would.

There is also the option of using concrete as framing for garage door openings. This can be a pretty difficult task to accomplish and you will need a lot of help. You should also expect to add about 20 percent to your expenses, compared to using wood. It will also take a longer time to finish. However, you end up with a fireproof and definitely strong framing.

It is important that you add some "wrapping" or insulation between the walls and the framing. This will help make sure that the garage is airtight and therefore, more energy efficient.

When you install the framing for the garage door opening, you have three sides to choose from. Make sure that you install the top jamb first. Some people begin with the sides, thinking that the task is made easier that way. However, starting from the top will enable you to make adjustments easier and will ensure the stability of the framing.

Always get help when framing. The materials you are going for the garage door frame can be pretty heavy and you need to have someone help you install it in order to be sure of your safety and of the proper installation of the frame.

The door typically hinges on the back jambs, so you have to take special care in making sure that they are square. This means taking precise measurements and using precision tools like a level to make sure that the frame is even. And that's it! You are done framing for garage door openings.
