Your Options Of Garage Doors
|
If you are looking to build a new garage door, then the first thing you should consider is the material to use. When you start on this project, you have these choices:
Wood - Probably the most cost-effective option for a door, wood is quite versatile and provides you with a great natural look. Another advantage with this material is that it is easily tooled, which means that you will find it easier to work with and install than other materials. Actually, when people use wood for the garage door, they don't necessarily pick it because of its durability. Wood actually tends to contract and expand depending on the weather. This puts its long-term use into question. You should also know that wood demands maintenance -you have to repaint or refinish it every few years if you want to maintain a good looking door. The easiest type of garage door you can build with this material is a tilt-up one. Using plywood and other inexpensive materials, you can spend as low as 400 dollars for a strong and stable door. Steel - If durability is what you are looking for, then steel should be your option. One problem is this can be a bit more expensive than other materials. However, you won't regret using it. Why? Other than durability, steel actually has qualities that will rival other materials. Let's take the look, for instance: steel today can actually be embossed with wood-grain patterns. That's right: technology today allows people to make steel look like wood! This means that matching up the door with the rest of the garage is a cinch. Maintenance is easy as the durability of the material assures that you only need to repaint it a few times. One downside to using steel is that if it does get dented, you are going to have a difficult time replacing it. Aluminum - This has nearly all the advantages offered by steel, plus one: it is quite inexpensive. Actually, using this material for your door is very nearly like using wood, at least in terms of expenses. You can expect to spend something between 400 to 700 dollars if you go with this option. There is one major drawback to this material. Although it doesn't really rust and is very light weight, making for easy construction, aluminum can be easily dented. Just a slight bump can leave a highly visible mark on the door, marring its beauty. Fiberglass - This option should be seriously considered if the location is near the ocean. Why? Well, fiberglass doors are actually pretty popular in such locations because they are highly resistant to salt air -which is quite corrosive to other materials. It is also translucent, which makes it ideal for locations where the passage of light can be quite important. It can save you a huge amount on your electricity bill if you work in the garage. This material is also quite lightweight, which means that you will find it easy to install. However, fiberglass really shouldn't be considered in what you would call "typical" conditions, since it is a poor insulator, which means a significant increase on your heating bills if you are in a cold climate. Speaking of cold climates, this garage door material also tends to break easily in such weather. 3 Reasons Not to Attempt Fixing Garage Door Problems Yourself
By Barry Jenkins
